The FT0554 Variable speed topside unit (for use with Vibrocorer that does not have sensors), can only used with the standard version of the Vibrocorer as it only has the ability to control the vibrohead via direct connection. The unit is powered from a variable frequency drive inverter on the surface and a three-phase power cable.
The FT0555 HVDC topside unit (for use with vibrocorer that has sensors), can only be used on a vibrocorer with the subsea electronics housing. Using the FT555 gives the operator the ability to communicate and control the vibrocorer while it is on the seabed. The following sensors are available with the FT0551 + FT0555 system –
- Altimeter
- Real Time Penetration
- Heat flow Probe (Mk2)
The vibrocorer with sensors is controlled by the FT0555 on the surface to a subsea inverter and communications module. This uses a DC umbilical and comms link for the power and data communications.
3-phase power is connected to the FT0555 topside controller box. The umbilical connects from the topside controller to the frame of the vibrocorer or directly to the vibro-head (depending on the umbilical configuration). If a winch is being installed it should be connected in between the topside controller and the vibrocorer via a suitable slipring.
The umbilical can be connected to either the vibrating head, or to the frame depending on deployment configuration.
