Feritech creates a sensory room for local primary school

Feritech Global has recently undertaken an exciting project for a local school as part of its commitment to helping the local community.

Stithians Community Primary School is around two miles from Feritech’s Innovation Centre near Falmouth in Cornwall.

The school had identified that they would like to create a  sensory room for pupils. Sensory rooms provide a safe and supportive space for neurodivergent students to escape the potentially overwhelming environment of a busy classroom.

Up until now, pupils who did not find it easy to socialise would sometimes seek out some isolation and quiet time, but this was hard to find within the existing school layout.

Although of particular benefit to pupils who are neurodivergent, it was recognised that the opportunity to retreat to a sensory room occasionally could potentially help nurture the wellbeing of all pupils.

The team at Feritech rose to the challenge and created a new dedicated sensory area out of three 20 feet container units.

General Manager Mark Smith explains: “We transformed the containers into a sensory room, as well as  providing extra storage and a cloakroom. All the containers were fully clad in wood, so they were made to look very attractive and blend with their surroundings.

“The containers have been arranged around a paved courtyard  where we have planted shrubs and flowering plants. We have also placed bedding baskets on top of the containers for wild flowers. So the whole area is now a natural haven that appeals to all the senses.

“Inside the sensory room, the pupils are surrounded by relaxing colours and can unwind on large floor cushions and bean bags. There are also soft toys and drawing equipment available to the children, so the environment is as comfortable and soothing as possible. This enhances their overall sense of wellbeing and supports their learning.

“This is now a superb new asset for the school.”

The new facility was officially opened at an Open Day and ribbon-cutting, attended by staff, parents and pupils. Mark says: “The feedback has been extremely positive from all. Most importantly, the children are now using the new sensory space and experiencing the wellbeing benefits that were originally envisaged.”

Feritech MD Rob Ferris adds: “At Feritech Global, we are committed to contributing positively to our local community and our local environment in every way we can. This has been a great way to use our skills to make a difference to children at our local school. It also shows how much can easily be achieved by businesses through thinking ‘out of the box’ and having a can-do attitude.”

Feritech Global spearheads subsea operations innovation for Oceaneering

Feritech Global has completed a major design and build project for Oceaneering, the world’s largest provider of subsea robotics to the offshore energy industry. The company has designed a next generation auto-drop piston corer which is expected to dramatically reduce the amount of time needed for subsea geotechnical surveying, increasing safety and efficiency, whilst reducing costs.

A piston corer is a long, heavy tube plunged into the seafloor to extract samples of soft sediment.  Analysis of these samples provides vital information for developers who want to build installations out at sea, such as wind turbines, oil and gas pipelines, or undersea cables.

Rob Ferris, Managing Director of Falmouth-based Feritech Global, said: “The new auto-drop piston corer technology represents a step change in precision and efficiency. We estimate that this new product will enable seabed samples to be collected up to ten times faster than with traditional piston corers.”

The new bespoke system has been developed for Oceaneering with their project team involved in its development, providing feedback at each stage.

The new system includes a range of innovative features. Using sophisticated software, the auto-drop piston corer can be programmed, lowered to pre-set sea depth and then automatically released. This provides much greater precision and faster speeds than traditional piston corers, which are launched manually by a trigger mechanism. As well as improving efficiency, this system also enhances operator safety.

In addition, the Launch and Recovery System (LARS) and the winch can be operated remotely, through a control panel which is integrated into a lightweight wearable pack. This allows the operator to carry the control panel on the front of his body, making it portable and flexible. As a result, piston corer operations can be carried out safely by only one person, whereas previously at least two staff would have been needed to operate all the equipment required.

The upgraded LARS system also includes a new, strengthened barrier rail, which can withstand pressures of up to 2 tons.

Brandon Wacasey, Project Management Lead for Survey and Geotechnical Operations at Oceaneering says: “We are delighted with the outcome of this pioneering development project. This innovative new system will help increase the safety and efficiency of our subsea survey operations and help us continue to build our Geoscience market position.”

Oceaneering intends to deploy the new auto-drop piston corer in the international market.

Rob Ferris adds: “At its best, innovation is driven by really listening to users and using smart user insights to invent new solutions to challenges. This flagship project is a great example of that. We are very excited to see the new system deployed in 2024 and look forward to continuing to work closely with Oceaneering, as we continue to push at the frontiers of subsea geotechnical survey technology.”

Feritech shares the spotlight at Import Export Show 2023

Feritech was proud to be chosen as a finalist in the IOE&IT International Trade awards for 2023. This was the very first year that these awards have been held.

Feritech was nominated in the ‘Sustainable Trade’ award category alongside The Hilditch Group and the eventual winners, RS.

The awards were announced at the Import Export Show which took place on 15th November 2023 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, London. The aim of the awards was to recognise quality and innovation in global trade. Any organisation around the world operating internationally, regardless of size, sector or industry, as well as individuals and teams, could enter the awards. Micro businesses, SMEs, large businesses, traders and professionals from across the supply chain were encouraged to seek recognition for their achievements.

The inaugural Import Export Show brought together senior figures from the global trade community, including a line-up of key business leaders and policymakers, to address how international trade can deliver for the UK.

The Sustainable Trade category aimed to shine the spotlight on businesses with demonstrable evidence of having placed environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues at the forefront of how they trade. Judges said they were looking for a business that not only talks the talk but also delivers, placing ESG at the heart of all they do and reaping positive rewards as a result.

Feritech MD, Rob Ferris, said:

“Many congratulations to RS on their well-deserved win. We were delighted to be selected as a Finalist and to be in such prestigious company, alongside two of the leading export companies in the UK.  I was especially pleased to see us nominated for a sustainability award. This is something that is very close to our hearts and has been a driving force that has shaped the design of our new Innovation Centre, where we have set out to prove that advanced manufacturing can work in harmony with the environment.

“To be selected  as one of the top three companies in the UK for sustainable trade is a huge honour and we are very proud of the achievement.”

They are regarded as the highest official UK awards for British businesses.

Feritech Global Ltd was founded in 2015 by Rob Ferris and Gemma Ferris. It is an advanced engineering company specialising in designing and building products that are used in extreme marine environments. The company built its reputation by carrying out marine geotechnical surveys. This involves going out into deep oceans and sending down specialised electronic systems to conduct tests to work out certain properties of the ocean floor. This is vital information for clients who want to install infrastructure out at sea, such as wind, tide or wave turbines, power cables or pipelines.

Before being named a winner of the King’s Award, Feritech Global had to undergo a rigorous assessment process, including a detailed audit of their financial figures. The company won the King’s Award for International Trade for Outstanding Short Term Growth in overseas sales over three years.
